Lithium Battery Packaging & Shipping Requirement
Since 2009, lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries have been classified as dangerous goods. They can only be transported under compliance with strict guidelines imposed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Many couriers and postal companies refuse to carry lithium batteries, but PACK & SEND provides fully compliant packaging and freight services.
Devices with Lithium Batteries
Lithium batteries are found in many devices, including:
- Mobile phones and tablets
- Laptops and computers
- Digital cameras and camcorders
- Wireless headphones, earbuds and gaming controllers
- Smartwatches & wearable devices
- Drones, action cameras and hobby RC equipment
- E-bikes, e-scooters and other personal electric vehicles
- Cordless power tools and cordless garden equipment
- Portable power banks and jump-start battery packs
- Home backup power stations, solar generators and UPS systems
- Medical and mobility devices (e.g., portable oxygen concentrators, electric wheelchairs)
- Smart home devices and IoT equipment (doorbells, sensors, smart remotes)
Why Lithium Batteries are Dangerous Goods
Lithium batteries pose fire and safety risks if damaged or improperly packed. They can overheat, leak, or ignite during transport. Strict international standards classify them as dangerous goods, requiring specialist packaging, labelling and handling.
Shipping Lithium Batteries Domestically in Australia
Lithium batteries can be shipped within Australia, but they must meet domestic transport regulations. Devices with installed batteries are usually accepted, but loose or damaged batteries may be restricted.
PACK & SEND ensures your items are safely packed, labelled correctly, and meet all domestic shipping standards. We service locations across Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and nationwide.
All lithium battery shipments require assessment and booking through a Service Centre to ensure full compliance with transport regulations.
Shipping Lithium Batteries Internationally
Sending lithium batteries overseas requires compliance with international regulations such as IATA. Some destinations have stricter rules or may not accept certain battery types.
PACK & SEND handles all documentation, classification, and packaging to ensure your parcel is compliant and arrives safely. We ship to destinations including the USA, UK, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe.
Cost of Shipping Lithium Batteries
The cost of shipping lithium batteries depends on several factors, including:
- Battery type and quantity (lithium-ion vs lithium-metal, single or bulk)
- Whether they're installed in a device or shipped loose
- Destination and shipping method (domestic vs international, air vs sea)
- Required packaging, labelling, and documentation

Air Freight vs Sea Freight for Shipping Batteries
Air Freight
Air freight is the quicker option, ideal for urgent shipments or time-sensitive deliveries. It's well-suited for devices with lithium batteries installed, like laptops or cameras. However, air freight has stricter rules and higher costs due to the safety risks involved.
Sea Freight
Sea freight is better for larger shipments where time is less critical. It's generally more affordable, especially for businesses moving high volumes of battery-powered products. However, the slower transit time and additional packaging needs should be factored into planning.

What Our Customers Are Saying
FAQs About Lithium Battery Shipping
Do lithium batteries need to be removed from devices?
Not necessarily. In many cases, lithium batteries are safest and most compliant when they remain installed inside the device. However, loose or spare batteries are heavily restricted and may not be accepted on some services, especially by air. Once we know what you’re sending and where it’s going, our Service Centre team will advise whether the battery can stay in the device, needs special packing, or cannot be sent on its own.
Can I Ship Lithium Batteries Overseas?
Yes, in most cases you can. Through PACK & SEND's comprehensive international courier freight service, you can have your consignment sent almost anywhere in Australia or the world via air, road or sea.
As lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods, they need the careful handling and personalised service provided at our Service Centres. There are some circumstances where we may not be able to send certain lithium batteries (e.g. lithium batteries on their own cannot be sent).
Please contact your local PACK & SEND service centre for specific advice regarding your needs and circumstances.
